Sesshin Guidelines
Sesshin retreats are conducted in silence and involve
intensive meditation practice. There are certain recommendations
we follow in order to foster an environment in which everyone can
practice.
Behavior
We observe basic sesshin precautions of silence and inward
focus
No unecessary talking
Don't look around (keep eyes at a 45 degree angle)
No social courtesies
No unassigned reading
No cell phones, radios, headphones or other such
distractions
Clothing
Wear cloths that are dark or have subdued tones. Avoid clothing
with bright patterns or large logos.
Sitting robes are encouraged.
Clothing should be appropriate for the season.
Bring clothing for body work and yoga.
Hygiene
Maintain personal hygience.
Do not wear perfumes or strong scents.
Be On Time for all Activities
Be at your seat 10 minutes before dawn zazen and 5 minutes
before other sitting periods begin.
Be seated in the zendo by the end of the second round
of the han.
Other items to bring
Bring your own towel and toiletries.
Bring your own watch, alarm clock.
Bring insect repellent, sun lotion and hat in summer.
Bring gloves and warm clothing in winter.
If you have specific needs or concerns, or if this
is your first sesshin, please let sesshin coordinators know before
the beginning of sesshin.
