Hula Classes in New York City

All classes are held at a new location which is the Dance Theatre Workshop on 219 W. 19th St., between 7th and 8th Avenues. Please note that class times may vary.

Saturday New Beginners Class will focus on the basic hand and feet movements and start to explore the ancient dance through study of Hawaiian values and the chants.

Saturday Beginning Kahiko focuses on the ancient dances of Hawaii, values and mythology.

Sunday classes are for students with at least a year of hula/dance experience or permission of the kumu. Auana is the modern hula and Kahiko is the ancient or traditional hula and includes chanting, usage of dance impliments and Hawaaian values.

The Second Annual Ho'ike will be held at the Chelsea Studios at 151 West 26th Strret (between 6th & 7th Avenues, Studio #507 in New York City. It will take place on Sunday, May 4th from 2 to 5 pm (Please be prompt). Hula Auana and Kahiko students of Kumu June will present their dance and share a wonderful time with you. Everyone is invited so please come!

Hula Kahiko Class includes:

    • Traditional dances learning basic foot work and hand gestures
    • Research on the different aspects of the dance: mythology, ali'i/royalty; plants, place names.
    • Chanting
    • Learning of implements
