Often returning veterans may not find the community
and spiritual support that is familiar with their experiences.
The Zen Community is committed to providing this kind of support
to any veteran. Practice circles are a safe way to listen and
speak from the heart about our experiences with others. A talking
piece is used so that no cross talk takes place in the circle
and only the person with the talking piece is allowed to speak.
This circle is open to all veterans and members of the Zen Community
of Oak Park.
The circle will be facilitated by Sensei Robert
Joshin Althouse, Buddhist priest and Abbot of the Zen Community.
As of April 2008, the circle will continue each month at the
Unitarian Church of Evanston, which is located at 1330 Ridge
Ave. in Evanston. For more details, please contact the church
at 847.864.1330.
Also leading this group will be David Pyle and
Seanon Holland. Both veterans and students at the Meadville Lombard
Theological School, David is a US Army Chaplaincy Candidate.
He served in Panama, Colombia, El Salvador, and Bosnia y Herzegovina.
David is also a member of the Zen Community of Oak Park. Seanan
served in the Marine Corps in Kosovo, Zaire, and Iraq and is
preparing to return to active duty as a chaplain.
This circle is provided free of charge to all veterans,
though dana donations are always appreciated to support the work
of the temple. There is no registration for this circle, so please
just show up at the appropriate time.
